waking life intro

i had a head hurting conversation with my friend up in scotland. it's always nice to hear what people on the other side of the world has to say. we were basically discussing things like human freedom - religion vs. science - destiny - time - luck - the society - dreams - reality and most of philosophies. we started off our conversation discussing the virginia tech massacre (i think it was only one or two days after the incident happened when we chatted on msn - so it was a very hot topic). we were basically peacefully argue about whether there's such thing as destiny - or time. how can you define time? well, according to dictionary.com..

time
1. the system of those sequential relations that any event has to any other, as past, present, or future; indefinite and continuous duration regarded as that in which events succeed one another.
2. duration regarded as belonging to the present life as distinct from the life to come or from eternity; finite duration.

it says indefinite. isn't it funny? melbourne is 10 hours AHEAD of scotland. so he was living 'in the past'. if that makes sense. and how funny, there are parts of the earth who are seeing the exact same sun or moon, at the same moment, but they're in different dates and days?! (not sure where yet, but it'll be interesting to figure out which one - which will be done soon).

as our heads started to hurt a bit more, he ended up giving me a link. which i figured to be a movie trailer of 'waking life' (2001). it's a digitally rotoscoped movie about human existentialism and posthumanity (he knew that i'm a design student and was looking for a nice reading material for the media class).

i've watched the film.

well, basically this film is more like a start for the audience to think and define what life, dream, reality and time really are. i very much like this film because the philosophies, questions and facts that were mentioned during the entire film. they're awesomely interesting. i did take notes when i was watching the movie - but it's very sketchy and in draft state. i will post them up soon when i watch the movie for the second time. somehow i can't borrow it from the rmit library. so it's not very convenient to have to watch it in the library and can't repeat the film over and over again. i might buy the dvd because i think it's worthed!!! : )

for those who are interested the movie is called 'Waking Life' by Richard Linklater. it's graphically so cool and inspiring. and philosophically fun!!
