why do we have to do this?

what does global warming - public's level of awareness - exhibition - and readings have to do with design? in a way, yes - it does require us to communicate, but i don't see the design aspect to it. this is not what i've chosen the course for. sure, the open-mindedness and exploration bits are fun. but.. what does this relate to design?
